about

The idea of transcribing a work by Gustav Mahler for the harp was first suggested to me by the producer Pedro Blanc when he invited me to give a recital at the National Pantheon in Lisbon in September 2019, as part of the festival dedicated to Sigmund Freud. The idea was inspired by the friendly relationship between Freud and Mahler, and it quickly turned into a bit of a brainteaser. How was I to pare down Mahler's gigantic orchestrations, imbued with the rich timbre of several instruments, to just one single instrument? After much research, it seemed logical for me to focus on the famous "Adagietto" from the Fifth Symphony, in which Mahler gives a particular prominence to the harp, supported by a sea of strings in a movement that is both inward-looking and grandiose.
