about

The "Nimrod" movement of Edward Elgar's Enigma Variations is another piece that is associate with a defining moment of my life. During a trip to London in the fall of 2017, I was lucky enough to attend Sir Simon Rattle's first official concert as principal conductor of the London Symphony Orchestra at the Barbican Center. In a programme featuring almost exclusively contemporary British composers, Rattle had included this work by Elgar, who had been one of the first conductors appointed to lead this legendary orchestra. I well remember the exquisite moment at the end of the ninth movement when the strings shift suddenly from a forte dynamic to a very soft, almost inaudible dynamic. At the time, the London Symphony Orchestra's interpretation of this passage had taken my breath away, and my sister and I had turned to each other, our eyes filled with tears, both of us feeling a thrill of rapture. This powerful experience, which came at a difficult time in my life, has left an indelible stamp on my psyche, which is why I feel a special connection to this work. It was clear that I had to include "Nimrod" in my harp transcription project: I relished both the challenge and the opportunity to perpetuate the thrill I had felt during that memorable London performance.
