about

Felix Mendelssohn's concert overture The Hebrides is a work that marked my adolescence. I had the opportunity to absorb a great deal of music during an optional course in orchestral literature given by the conductor, composer, arranger and teacher Gilles Bellemare at the Conservatoire de musique de Trois-Rivières. This piece particularly captivated me at the time, and became the musical backdrop to many of the joys and sorrows of that tumultuous period of my life. Felix Mendelssohn describes his memories of an outing to Fingal's Cave, a majestic basalt formation located on the island of Staffa, in Scotland. In the overture's successive "musical waves", I hear echoes of the awe and wonderment that Mendelssohn experienced at the sight of this marvel of nature. Adapting it for the harp was no easy task. Although the piece was composed for a medium sized orchestra, the layering of thematic materials and chromatic scales challenged my creativity. It was a great delight for me to put my stamp on these pages of Mendelssohn's that are so dear to my heart.
